What to do in and around Evron

Our gite is based in Mayenne, Pays de La Loire.    It is within easy reach of the large historic towns of Mayenne, Laval and Le Mans.   The area itself is well known for its walks and cycle routes and quaint french villages.  You are also only a couple of hours away from St Michel and the sea.

The following is a small list of  acitivites  and local area information that you might find useful


Ste Suzanne, medieval castle - 7km away

Classified as one of the 'most beautiful villages in France' and also a 'city of character', Sainte-Suzanne is a small fortified town in a verypicturesque location on a rocky outcrop above the river Erve.   Plenty of walks.

Close by - "Campe des Anglais', Dolmen des Erves (4th or 5th centruy BC), Ferté Clairbois (medieval centre), watermills.

Evron - the local town with shops and restaurants

5 minutes drive is Evron, a small town with a large choice of shops and restaurants. Every Thursday there is a traditional french market selling local produce. More info here

 At the centre of town is the benedictine Abbey of Notre Dame.  More info here 

 


Jublains - ancient Roman settlement - 13 KM away

Here you can visit the remains of the roman theatre, and temple: a substantial fortress and the thermal batchs which can be seen beneath the church in the villiage. More details here


Saulges Caves to explore - 19km

The Saulges Caves are a group of numerous related cave systems some of which were inhabited in prehistoric times and have decorated walls from that era. Two of the caves are accessible by the public.  More details here


Mayenne, Laval and Le Mans

Mayenne 24 km - The beautiful town of Mayenne is well worth a visit with its castle and riverside walk.  More info here

Laval 29 km - Wander around the old medieval centre of the town, with the river and medieval bridge to one side, and the dramatic Laval Caslte on the other.    Take one of the orgnaised boat trips along the river.  More info here

Le Mans 48 km -  24 hr hour race held each June.  The city also has a fantastic old town with narrow streets and timbered houses.  Take a step right back in time.  Well worth a visit with lots to do.   More infor here

 


Children's activities

Apart from the histroric sites in the area there are also a number of leisure acitivities for children.  The ares is well known for its cycle routes.  There is a cycle track from Evron to Gue de Selle where you will find a large leisure lake to wander around with play areas for children, pedalos on the lake and a beach area.   Restaurant and cafes on site or plenty of tables for a picnic.

Laval -  Swimming pool with water slide, karting, paintball, swinging through the trees (very high up), cycling routes

Paris is a 3 hr drive away (disneyland 3.1/2)

Seaside St Malo, St Michael's Mont approx 2.1/2 hours drive away
